The most important point to know first is that these are not Y-stakes. They are not straight cylindrical stakes either. I think they should change the name, actually, because they’re shaped more like a railroad track or a steel I-beam.
This shape does allow them to cut a particular groove in dirt and grip better than a straight stake. I’m still not certain about them compared to my usual Y-stakes, though.
They’re short. Comparable to the mini groundhog. So they’re very light and they’re going to replace my larger Y-stakes for ultralight backpacking. When it comes to how well they grip, the length will be the main concern, not the shape.

Most stake failures result from operator error. When you feel resistance, stop pounding. No stake will hold up to being slammed with a rock or stomped on with one’s foot when it encounters a rock or a tree root. These stakes work just fine for staking out a tent or tarp shelter. Good design, easy to clean after pull-out.

I have a lot of money invested in MSR groundhogs. These are more stable if you’re in a windy environment. They are also easier to drive in if you’re in a very rocky environment.

For light weight through hikers. It necessarily needed for weekend car camping

Daggers broke in slightly tough soil on the pullout. Dissappinted. Loops were useless and broke on every pull. Sharp and hard to handle. Hard to pull out

I have these Dirt Daggers and the MSR Groundhogs that I use with my Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL1, and I like these stakes the best. They are lighter than the stakes that came with my Tiger Wall, and they are very strong and have performed consistently well with repeated use in varied terrains, including sand and rocky soil. I like them better than the Groundhogs because their design allows less dirt to get stuck on the stakes when I breakdown my tent, so they are much easier to clean.

No failures yet. Super sturdy. Tip…. Use a plastic champagne bottle cork/stopper to push them in and save your hand … don’t pound them in. Friend pounded one in with a rock and the stake pierced a root. Got very stuck.
