I'm writing this review while currently sitting in this tent on a camping trip so I can give you the best objective viewpoint. First, Kelty is a solid company that makes great gear. This tent is no exception. I bought one when the Far Out was first released as a birthday gift for my little brother. He uses it all the time moto camping and loves it. I thought it would be a good idea to have for that purpose too. However, I had two issues with this tent and I'm ultimately going to pack it up and send it back. One of them is entirely my fault, I didn't check my gear before I left for the trip. Something I always do but skipped this time around because I hadn't planned on taking this tent when it showed up on my door a few hours before I headed out. I assumed everything was good with it when I threw it on the back of the motorcycle. You know what they say about assumptions. Had I set up the tent to check for sizing and defects, I would have sent it back right then because I would have know it wasn't going to work for me. Instead, I was left with a "no choice" situation when I got to camp. Problem number one was that whatcampingtent.com sent me the wrong size. I ordered a 3person, was shipped the 2 person. It happens, no big deal. Not Kelty's fault either and I should have caught it before I took the tent to camp and set it up. One of the guys I was camping with was like "will that thing for you?". I couldn't figure out how a 3 person tent was soo small and then I saw the pack bag and realized I had the wrong tent. The 2 person is small, but I vowed to make it work, I really had no choice. I did very much appreciate the much smaller pack size and weight than my normal tent (Klymit Cross Canyon). While it was small, the reasons I'm sending it back aren't just the size, its the durability for people of my "dimensions". I'm 6'3, 280lbs. I find myself sleeping diagonal in this tent and still really can't stretch out. Looking at the specs of the 3 person, it's not that much bigger and I highly doubt would make enough of a difference. Again, for the size and weight, I can sacrifice a bit of comfort, but it's really tight with a pad, sleeping bag, and all my gear. I feel like I'm staying over at one of those hoarder houses you see on TV with stuff piled up everywhere. The biggest issue though related to the durability of this tent for the big folks. Again, I want to be fair and reiterate that I'm a big dude and this tent obviously doesn't appear to be made with "Shrek like" campers in mind. While trying to get out of the tent on the first morning, I stood up to get through the door and had to really contort to get out. Getting in and out was a game of limbo. I was wearing Crocks at the time and apparently my weight on my foot mixed with the grip of the rubber clogs was too much for the tent floor and my heel went right through tearing a softball size hole right in front of the door. Luckily, Kelty includes a footprint with this tent and I was able to bring that inside and use it as a floor for the remainder of my trip. It did rain a bit yesterday and no water came up. It's also been pretty windy and this tent has otherwise held up very well. I really do like it but for a guy my size, this tent wouldn't hold up more than a couple trips. If it was about 6 inches longer and had a thicker floor, it'd be my new "go to". Pros: Great rain fly that clips into itself so you can have it half open for airflow. Small packed size and weight for backpacking or motorcycle camping. Plenty of gear loops, storage pockets, and high quality stakes. 2 doors is nice and the footprint is included. Got several compliments on the look and colors. Cons: Not meant for the over 6'/200lbs demographic. Two person barely fits one with a pad and gear. Floor is very thin and you'll need to consider bringing a packing blanket or heavy duty small tarp to put down to keep from causing damage which will add to the bulk and weight. I'll definitely continue to buy Kelty products but this tent was ultimately not for me.
7 days on the Appalachian trail and this tarp did great. Went through some heavy downpours.. Easy to get up and down and loved how it worked for me!
These are great for staking things down. Used for our trampoline and they went way in the ground and seem strong. Have had 35mph winds and no issues.
Decent small tent. As has been noted elsewhere, however, this is really a bivvy tent. To give you an idea of that, the floor is almost completely taken up by a sleeping pad. Its purpose is to protect you from the elements, not to give an airy feel. It is pretty lightweight. It is pretty easy to set up once you practice a couple times. Advantages: - relatively lite - relatively inexpensive (you can pay insane amounts for a small lightweight tent) - low profile, so is OK in the wind. - interesting zipper top design that could be useful. - like the attached rain fly design! Disadvantages: - inside gear pockets are too small and are at bad angles, so don't hold much and spill things out. - design of zippers is poor. They leave small gaps that allow small insects (like ants) to potentially enter. I will try to post pix of this. - potential big issue: if you use for backpacking, which seems to be the purpose, there will NOT be enough space to get your backpack inside. That is, unless you and the pack are small. This may lead to leaving it outside in the rain, etc. Note that the vestibule is very small and almost non-existent. EDIT - See the attached images of the zipper issue. It might not seem like much, but when ants abound it could be an issue. I am thinking of how to seal these gaps. I will be working on trying to seal those zipper gaps as there are a lot of little bugs in the desert.
I have camped all over the nation, and very rarely do I find a product as worthy as this. It’s by far the easiest tent I’ve ever seen to assemble, is lightweight, has two vestibules! (An item for experienced campers) There is two issues I have with the tent. First, is the tent floor is made of the same material as the walls, so it is easily tore and one will need to take heed of precaution when setting it up. My best recommendation is to clear the ground, put down a tarp or item as such, then lay the tent on top. Regardless, it is completely sealed and I had no issue with leaks. Secondly, it is very...hot. I can imagine when raining the tent is cooler, but, I have asthma and I found myself heating up as the complete lack of airflow makes it interesting. Again, in all regards, Camping is best in the Fall, winter and spring. There are no bugs, the weather is perfect, and you can dress comfortably. In the summer, if there is no rain, I highly recommend not putting on the rain fly. So, if you are a serious camper, (one who doesn’t just camp in the summer in overcrowded campsites) Then this tent is a must buy. I have included s photo of folding up the rain fly. It is oddly shaped, but if you Bri g the corners together, and overlap them, then you should get this shape as shown, and then it is easy to wrap up in the tent. That is very important, put it in the center of the tent before folding everything back up, this is how you will find it when it arrives at your home, and it is the easiest, most simple, and the best way of storing your tent. Thanks
Great big tent! Room for our family of 4, our medium-sized dog, all of our stuff, and room to walk through. Also the front eaves have enough space for a couple of camping chairs and to keep some firewood dry (!) It was a little drafty on cold nights (40s F). (Maybe we need better sleeping bags.) We waterproofed it with a silicone spray before camping. One night we got hit with a 3-hr hail storm and stayed pretty much dry, but the hail formed puddles on either side of the dome and we had to keep pushing up to drain those pools. Still it didn't let water in EXCEPT the seam where the gray floor material meets the blue wall material, where it did let slow drips in. Nothing a quick wipe with a camping towel couldn't take care of, but I was hoping the WeatherTec and silicone spray would keep us 100% dry. Oh well.
This tent goes up fairly easily. It would have been even easier if it had a few simple directions. (None were included). We tested it in Florida where there was no wind or rain, so i have no info on that. The quality of the fabric, construction and zippers are more than sufficient. The partition however was disappointing. It attaches at center peak of tent and at 2 locations on each side with a zipper down the middle. The tent isn’t large enough to use the partition as a room divider, but could serve as a privacy blind for changing. We used 2 adult size cots. See Photo. The airflow is great! I don’t think we will ever fit it back into the tent bag.
Love this tent. Was worried about how easy it would be to set up, but it is super simple to set up and take down. Less than 2 minuets to set up and take down. Great on the beach even on windy days. Highly recommend
I bought this footprint for use with the Mountainsmith Upland 2 tent. The upland 2 has only 1 inch difference in length and width (larger) than the morrison 2 which would translate to just 1/2 larger per corner and it fits perfectly. This footprint has a hydro static head rating of 2000 mm and weighs in at 9 ounces. Also the footprint has the female clip ends as well as grommets and loops on the corners so you can set up with just the rain fly, poles and footprint if you wanted a light weight option.
Easy assembly
Pops-up in seconds. Folds into a compact tube for transport. The attached sandbags are ingenious. Unfold one side, fill with sand and close up. To empty, fold the top back by detaching it (velcro), lift up and the sand empties.
It is nice and lightweight. Packs down nice and small, although it does suffer from the very common problem of not being able to fit back into its storage bag once used. I have to figure out how to properly fold it to get it back in. It seems like it has a lot of options of how to set it up, depending on the needs at my campsite. It comes with plenty of ropes and stakes for tying it down, though it could use a few more. I suggest investing in some nice poles and additional stakes and ropes for this tarp.
Arrived in a timely manner. Love the bag they came in. Looks very sturdy! I will be camping in 2 weeks and will let you know how pleased I am. Update : Perfect ! Holds tent down and although there was not any wind, I feel sure my tent would not blow away. Plus you can see the glow in the dark heads so you don't trip over them.
This tent almost jumped out of the bag and unfolded itself on me haha. I was trying to open it slowly so I could remember how to twist it back down, because I have a number of different tents that twist back into a circle, and some of them are difficult to shrink back down to their proper little circles. Luckily, I was able to easily fold this back down on my first try. The key is that you have to get it into a figure 8 but also, use some muscle. It is a tight spring and will resist a little bit. Anyway, once opened, it's a great little mesh tent. Works great for casual camping.
The tent is surprisingly light (about the weight of two beach chairs or one serious foldable fishing chair) and is easy to carry. The set up time was about 15 minutes. I made one error in that I didn’t fasten the crown point of the assembly to the top of the tent where the shower bag attaches. The shower bag it comes with is quite heavy when full, so the support is needed and will hold the bag toward the top of the shower. At full height that point is 7 feet. If you already have a shower bag this shower might be exactly what you are looking for. We acquired a shower bag in the fall after having learned to get by on 8oz bottle showers during the aftermath of Hurricane. We’ve tested both bags – the one that it comes with and the one we already had – and they worked great. The shower tent itself provides privacy, protection from bugs and has built in drainage panels in the shower section.
