I am 5 feet 11inches and this tent is amazing! It works in the rain just fine and is is very sturdy...I was very comfortable. With 2 windows there was plenty of ventilation .I highly recommend this tent! 5 stars!
We bought this beach sun shade/tent for a family vacation to Florida. I really like that it's very small and light when packed away and easy to set up. The beach was pretty dang windy for the week we were there, which may or may not have been due to Hurrican Beryl which was pounding our home in Houston while we were gone. Lol Even in windy conditions, I had absolutely no problems setting it up by myself, and once up, it stayed in place with the gusting winds. It's a fairly straightforward setup. If it is windy, definitely follow the instructions and dig pits for the weight bags to sit in. I saw another person with one similar to ours who didn't dig the pits (which adds maybe 5 minutes to the setup at most), and their bags drug across the sand causing them issues. One great thing about this model compared to the competitors is that this one has 8 weighted attached bags which definitely makes it more stable. If we had purchased one with just 4 bags, I would have had problems due to the gusty wind. The height and coverage area are great, and it's a solid product. At first, I was a little disappointed the 2 included shovels were plastic, but then I realized they don't have to be heavy duty, and I actually prefer them to be light weight in terms of being carried around. It was so nice to have on the beach, and I'm sure we'll get plenty of use out of it. If you're planning a beach vacation somewhere, I highly recommend this.
I finally got to use my hatchback tent that I bought some time ago. It works fine with my Grand Caravan. I could see this also working on a regular van with the double rear door. It's not a sleeping tent per se, but it functions just fine for a camp shower or dressing area. It could be a small sitting area as well. It does have a net to go under the car to keep bugs out. And the door zips open. There is a second screen door inside the exterior door. The material is lightweight but seems durable. It's not your typical tent fabric. Its softer. It dries fast. It seems like it is water repellent. There are strings attached to loops on the tent that could be used to tie it a million different ways on various vehicles with a hatchback. The tent stakes included are actually pretty good. They are just not long. And it has a handy storage stack. I really didnt have to fold this up fancy to get it back in the bag. There are no hooks or clips included. So you'll have to figure out what works for you. And as far as the wind goes, this is suseptable to high winds just like most tents. So it's likely best used on less windy days. I'm not disappointed.
Upon setting up the “upgraded” version of the tent, I noticed it was missing THE UPGRADE! The original version had only 4 guy out points ( two on the left and two on the right). The new version is supposed to have 6! Two on either side of the rear above the giant vent. This is important because under wind stress or heavy rain, the tent will sag and the overall structural integrity are compromised. I contacted One Tigris only to be told my message would be forwarded to a representative at whatcampingtent.com. I waited 4 days and got no response whatsoever. I reached out to OneTigris once again, only to be asked if I received the old version AGAIN. This time I clarified that I did in fact receive the old version. The pictures I’ve attached are the same I sent to the company. As it happens, I had a camping trip booked 5 days away from the day I received the tent. I decided to take it out (just one night). It rained heavily from approximately 8pm-6am and although the tent is waterproof, the condensation was horrible! For a tent that boasts its breath ability, this thing is awful. Oh! I almost forgot, the tent didn’t have a light hook at the peak (or anywhere for that matter) which was more of a pain than you might imagine. I still have heard nothing back from OneTigris as of today. The tent stakes are weak too. I’ve purchased more items than I can count on whatcampingtent.com, and I’ve had my fair share of disappointments, but never more so than now. This may be the only time I felt the need to review a product. Save your money! The old versions are being sold as “upgraded” and if you didn’t do your research on what was actually upgraded, you could easily end up with an inferior version of the product for the price of the new. Update: The company finally reached out to me and is sending me a new tent. Happy they made things right, but I’m hoping they pull the old models off the shelf so no one else has to go through this.
This tent doesn't fall into the lightweight "Backpacking Tent" category, but is great for car camping. Setup was easy, the inner part has integrated tent poles around a center hub which all click into place, giving the tent its shape. I was pleasantly surprised how tall it was inside, allowing me to sit up without touching the sides or top of the tent. The inner tent is all mesh, with large zip up doors on both sides. I loved that it has built in pockets at each end, as well as a hanging basket at the top. There is also a hook at the top to hold a battery operated lamp. The floor is a rubberized nylon which is very thick and should resist punctures from sticks and rocks on the ground. This floor extends up the wall about 2" providing some protection against water on the ground when it rains. Since, the inner part is all mesh, you will want to use the "rain fly" for privacy. I was very impressed that the rain fly is a thick nylon with a rubberized coating on the inside. This thing is going to keep you dry! The rain fly drapes over the assembled inner tent and clips on at the 4 corners as well as at 2 smaller poles which extend above the doors. There are also 4 guy ropes which attach 3/4 of the way up the corners of the rain fly to hold it in place. It comes with 16 sturdy 8" metal pegs to hold the tent and rain flap in place. Outside each door, there is a nylon pad which extends about 18" from the side of the inner tent. This is meant to be a clean floor to place your gear on - since it won't all fit in the tent if you are sharing it. The rain fly also extends this 18" past the door to give your gear cover on those rainy nights. Because of the coating on the rain fly, it is dark inside - allowing you to sleep in the daytime if you wish. The Rain fly also has two vents at the top - facing each end, which can velcro closed, or be propped open with a built-in 8" extender rod - giving you ventilation - even when the rain fly is installed. The rain fly also has flaps which extend down onto the ground allowing the tent to better divert water away from the inside. These flaps can be pegged down, or rolled up - depending on if you want water protection or better ventilation. The doors on the rain fly and the inner mesh tent can both be rolled up and held open by means of loop and toggle connectors. The one downside is that it has a very plastic smell, so air it out before you use it for the first time. My final takeaway is that this will be a great tent for car camping, and will do a great job of sheltering from rain, wind, and snow.
I purchased two of these for my kids. We set one up in the back yard to make sure it was big enough to fit my sons camping gear. He stayed in it for one night and one of the corners came detached from its loop. The tent was not ripped but the stitching gave way. Buyer beware.
I always put up any tent that I buy when I get it to test it out before camping. The packaging was good. The tent did go up fast. I like that it has two doors. After that it's all down hill. The stitching is not that great. The tie offs are flimsy. The stakes are sharp. I can see where someone might cut their hand putting them in the ground. Once in it I see that it will only fit two persons or one and a stove. Not 3 as it states on the top of the page. (Preself 3 Person Lightweight Tipi Hot Tent with Fire Retardant Flue Pipes Window Teepee Tents for Family Team Outdoor Backpacking Camping Hiking ) That is misleading. I could also see holes in the fabric while not wearing my glasses. I believe this tent will leak and will not last long. I really hate returning things. It's such a pain. However I think this needs to go back. I might have kept it if it were no more then $40, but at $84.80 no way. Just not worth the price.
I’m frustrated that it wasn’t more clearly communicated that this is only the screen portion of the canopy. The pictures and heading are misleading. Otherwise, it appears to be good quality, but I won’t be able to set it up until the rest is ordered.....
The good: This was a game changer for our family beach trip this year. Super easy to set up and take down, and very sturdy in the wind. A family with 2 shibumi shades were next to us and had to constantly re arrange them, until they finally took them down. The removable side shade was amazing!! Just had to change the sides as the sun moved. Would be great if you could buy additional ones. The bad: Only leaving 4 stars instead of 5 because unfortunately, on day 2 of using it, 2 of the stake loops broke off and left a hole in the sand pocket. So, we won’t be able to use it at the lake or in the yard.
Love everything about this tent except the ground stakes. I recommend upgrading to the harder thicker plastic ones from Walmart. It sets up easy although the directions are not the best. Stake down the base, put in the center pole, build then stake down the door and external guidelines.
We bought this tent in July in anticipation of our first camping trip in 5 years. To say my spouse is a reluctant camper is an understatement, so I did whatever I could think of (short of renting a furnished cottage) to make our week on the coast of Maine comfortable. I had been reading the comments about this tent for about a year before we decided for sure that we'd be camping this summer. Wish I'd gone for it in early summer, when Coleman was running a $20 rebate program! Oh, well. We practiced raising the tent one time before leaving home. In the hot sun, it took us a few minutes of frustration to figure out how to get all the arms extended, but really it wasn't too bad. Knocking it down wasn't bad either -- we managed to get it back into the case without opening up the gusset for extra space. Fast forward a week -- we sure were glad we had done a dry run as we raced the sunset to arrive at the campground. Setup went very fast. We used a tarp underneath (smaller than the footprint of the tent, as recommended by some of the commenters here), but that was it -- no seam-sealing or other prep. Someone else posted this week about using the tent for 2 people -- honestly, we were happy to have all that space for just the two of us, and couldn't imagine sharing it! It's spacious, but we liked the elbow room. To give an idea of how much room there was, we used a double-high, queen-size air mattress, and had plenty of room to walk on either side. I had little nightstands on either side of the bed as well. I also had a 4'x6' rug (from Ikea, in case you're interested) in the front area of the tent. I'll see if I can post a photo. We had only one day of rain that week, but it was torrential. Storms kept blowing through the area, so it rained hard, on and off, for hours. We had been out all day -- when we got back, we noticed that there had been a small leak. The vulnerable spot seemed to be where the curtain/room divider was sewn into the roof of the tent. We didn't have a fly, but we had staked the tent out as taut as we could, and that was the only moisture issue we experienced. Never noticed condensation inside the tent, even though we were by the coast and mornings could be damp. We were among pine trees, so it was easy to put the stakes in, but I was glad that we at least had a few longer spikes for the four corners of the tent, and a mallet. That kit that Coleman sells is actually kind of nice -- we asked for it in our wedding registry. It comes with four of the sturdier stakes, the mallet and a stake puller, plus a cute broom and dustpan. It all came in handy. Coleman Tent Kit One result of all that rain -- even though the tarp was much smaller than the footprint of the tent, a lot of water got trapped between the tarp that the underside of the tent. We discovered it at the end of the week, when we were dismantling the tent. But we never had any moisture underfoot, inside the tent. The bottom material must have been very well coated. The person who commented about needing both hands free to get in and out of the tent -- we experienced that as one of the major annoyances of the tent. It's the reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5. We wanted to keep it zipped, to keep out the mosquitoes, but every time we wanted to bring something into or out of the tent, it was hard to juggle it while holding onto the bottom of the zipper with one hand and raising the zipper tab with the other. Quite a pain, as our daily routine required many entrances and exits. Maybe next time we'll be a little less obsessive about keeping it sealed, since the zipper is protected by a nice, heavy flap with a few sturdy patches of Velcro along its length. Putting the tent back into the bag, with the bottom all wet and muddy, was a lot harder than when we did it the first time, when all was clean and dry. We didn't want to touch it and get our clothes all dirty, but you do have to kind of get down to roll it, and show it who's boss. It's a lot of work, IMO. That was where my "glamping" concept got a reality check! Looking forward to using it again, and I hope I won't have to wait 5 years! Also hope we don't experience the parts failures that others have described, or at least that Coleman will have come up with a suitable fix by then. It's worrisome to hear that these things can break, apparently for no good reason.
Purchased 2 of these, one for me and my brother. We always bring friends camping and this was spacious enough for all 4 of us. Lightweight & easy to setup. We camped in up in Glacier National Park and the tents held up just fine. Also no condensation in the tent! Awesome tent!
The tent is beautiful, very easy to set up and was a good size for 2 people although it is heavy and difficult to put inside the car due to its length. Another thing is that, it was raining all night and it started leaking on the floor , then the ceiling which made it very uncomfortable. We want to return it but too much hassle.
This product definitely took some time to figure out. There are no instructions. All I had were examples on the item site on whatcampingtent.com. I had to reconfigure to get it right several times. Also, the stakes are extremely small and light. I used heavy duty sand stakes instead. Plus, one of the ropes ripped as I was tied it for the first time. The tarp however seems high quality, and if it works to keep us dry I will be very happy. I will report back soon.
I've been hammock camping for about 10 years now. I don't sleep on the ground unless I absolutely have to. Hammock campers are like vegans. How do you know if there's a hammock camper in the room? They'll tell you. So, within all that, I am always trying to "spread the word" about how comfortable and awesome hammocks are. I have dialed my gear down to a science. I have also spent WAY too much money in search of the lightest gear I can find. I wish I had come across this tarp earlier. It's not the lightest winter tarp out there, but for the money, I think it's one of the best value tarps I've come across. It comes with everything you need to get started: stakes, ridgeline and guy lines. I love that the tie-out points are reinforced cordage and not grommets. Grommets are a weak point that will eventually tear out. It's also cool that there are center pull-out points on the walls of the tarp so you can maximize the interior space and secure it even further in inclement weather. All this for a very reasonable price. Very highly recommended!
